Fur production

Cages and crates – the norm

Worldwide, every year approx. 1.5 million dogs are used to produce fur and leather. Most of this fur is produced in the Far East. In part, the fur stems from dog farms, where the animals are held in dirty, dark, tight kennels. Even in the bitter cold winters of Northern China, the dogs’ housing will not be heated to ensure that their fur grows as thick as possible.

The animals only receive food and water on an irregular basis. Freezing, lacking the possibility to move and to keep themselves warm, the dogs lie listlessly in their cages until they are killed. Additionally, a large share of the fur stems from stray dogs captured and killed for just this purpose.

Various different methods are used to kill the animals. In order to avoid damaging the fur, the animals are beaten to death, poisoned, electrocuted or hanged with wire slings. Another method involves making an incision in the inguinal region of the animal and then leaving it to bleed to death. This means a long struggle with death and worse still, following this procedure, often enough, the animals are skinned while still alive.
