Farm housing of Chinchillas

Animals from the Andes on wire floors

Chinchillas are lively and nocturnal animals that hop around and lay back large distances in the mountains and cliffs that they inhabit. Crevices and caves serve them as shelter for rest and sleep.

Chinchillas on Russian fur farms are held by the hundreds, in cages stacked on top of each other (entire surface: half a square meter).

In the EU member states, Chinchillas suffer a particularly harsh fate, because their holding is not subjected to any animal protection laws. There are only recommendations in place, one of which states that Chinchillas should be killed prior to being skinned.

Please find in the table here a comparison of the requirements placed towards the holding of chinchillas in Switzerland and other countries (state: November 1, 2010).
