Farm housing of Arctic Foxes

A winter-hardy, arduous trotter

Arctic foxes are nomadic loners that live in territories of up to 30 km². They use subterranean cave systems to sleep in and as nurseries. Although they are predators, Arctic foxes adapt easily and also eat eggs, berries, insects, or waste produced by humans.

In Switzerland, Arctic foxes must be held in zoos or animal parks and enclosures of at least 40 m² that also comprise shelter and earth for digging. A fox on a Finnish farm, however, spends its life in a mesh wire cage of 0.8–1 m², according to recommendations. Arctic foxes are not protected by any animal laws and controls are limited to visiting inspections. Consequently, no official will ever enforce an animal-appropriate housing or killing.

Please find in the table here a comparison of the requirements placed towards the holding of Arctic foxes in Switzerland and other countries (state: November 1, 2010).
