Petition against seal products

In the EU, the import of seal products was prohibited a short while ago. The Swiss Parliament did not consider such a prohibition to be necessary and rejected it. Worldwide, however, a total of 30 states no longer wish to have anything to do with this brutal business. Switzerland is thus at risk of becoming an international trafficking spot for these products gained through animal suffering. Because we are against this, we support a petition to bring about an extensive ban on the importing and exporting of seal products to and from Switzerland.

On June 21, 2011, OceanCare and the Fondation Franz Weber submitted numerous signatures to the Swiss Parliament in Bern.

The ball is now in the court of the government

The basis for a new consultation procedure was also laid down by National Councilor Oskar Freysinger. On June 16, 2011, together with 30 supporters from all political fields, he submitted the motion „Import ban on seal products“ to the Swiss Parliament. Despite the fact that the Swiss Federal Council proved little interest in the protection of seals when it rejected the Freysinger motion in September 2011, on May 29, 2012, the Swiss National Council approved the motion with 132 against 28 votes. On December 4, 12 the Swiss Council of States decided to suspend the motion, stating that it wished to wait until the final decision regarding a EU import band had been made by the WTO. As per June 2013, the National Council holds tight to its refusal. The ball is now once again in the court of the Council of States.
